However, that paradigm does not address many well-known phenomena, such as sleep inertia, restoration of peak performance during sleep, recovery and reorganization of sleep after brain lesions, the nature of sleep homeostatic mechanisms, clinical conditions such as insomnia, and sleepiness and fatigue associated with multiple bodily ailments, such as rheumatoid arthritis and most autoimmune disorders, and with various chemotherapies. With our newer view, which posits that parts of the brain can be asleep while other parts are awake, it is easier to envision explanations for these phenomena. ..."
