Bloomfield) Note: From discussion of paper: "This experiment is the first to demonstrate the independent and combined effects of food restriction and hindlimb unloading on skeletal integrity. Our data confirm our hypothesis that food restriction and hindlimb unloading independently impair skeletal integrity via decreased bone formation but probably not, as we hypothesized, by increased bone resorption." . "These data provide evidence for an additional negative effect of under-nutrition in the context of disuse bone loss. We conclude that bone loss during spaceflight could be aggravated by consistent reductions in food intake as is frequently observed during short-term shuttle missions. These results may also have serious implications for bed-rest patients who restrict food intake or for those individuals who utilize food restriction in attempts to lose weight."
